It’s never the wrong time to call on Toad. Early or late he’s always the same fellow. Always good-tempered, always glad to see you, always sorry when you go!

Hello! Just wanted to let you know we’ve got 56 backers and over $2600. That’s amazing and we’ve still got over 2 weeks to make What Do You Call Your Butterfly a real, live, hard cover children’s book.

Its creative, colorful, and encourages kids to learn about other languages and cultures! If that’s up your alley, please check out our video and pass it along to your friends and family, especially those in education.

We’ll be giving free E-books to schools and teachers!

Here’s the link:

Butterfly
On butterflies.
The Ancient Greeks saw butterflies as symbols of the human soul.  In Asian cultures they stand for joy and happiness.  Elsewhere it’s change, rebirth, and transformation.
I have to admit I’ve never been too attracted to the butterfly. I  think they’re pretty and acknowledge they’re delicacy but as I’m illustrating my first book about butterflies (“I’m a real boy!”), I have taken a new interest.  They are truly beautiful creatures and I hope to capture their essence, whimsy, and brilliance as the images for ”What Do You Call Your Butterfly?” come together.
This children’s educational book will be about how to say butterfly in 10 different languages.  It’s a simple yet expanding concept that involves history, culture, linguistics, and symbolism to name a few.  Lessons for us all!  I leave you with a sneak peak.

Support The Local Food Hub

November 11th, 2009

localfoodhub2

I want to take a minute to say thanks to our own Local Food Hub.  They make local produce easily available to Charlottesville restaurants and a lot of our local schools.  They support Central Virginia farmers and are doing their part to make healthy food a part of our lives.

I’m continually amazed at the support Charlottesville offers our local establishments, so if you don’t know about the Local Food Hub, check them out and thank them for all the hard work they do.

One for One

October 5th, 2009

These are my !  I’d say new TOMS, but they are more loved now since receiving them in August, wearing them around town, and yes, apple picking in them this weekend.  Thanks Jenny and Anna!  Despite their appearance and weight, they are a very durable and comfortable shoe that I’d like to see more of, in Charlottesville specifically.

The beauty of purchasing TOMS is that you get shoes and so does a fellow human being who may have never had shoes before. Can you imagine? I walk to work, the studio, the bank, the grocery, to get coffee, my friends’ house, church, a million places and I’m certainly not thankful enough for whats covering my feet.

If you don’t know much about what they do at TOMS shoes it’s pretty cool. There are a number of ways to get involved so check ‘em out and then do something…least of all…buy a pair of shoes:)

Girl after my own heart

June 27th, 2009

So much to feel.

Today I met and clicked with a lady named Jann, a lover of classy, vintage collectibles, apparel, and nicknacks.  She lives to collect others people’s old stuff, bring history to life, and creates useful decorations, like wall clocks from vintage plates and decoupaged 1920′s style mirrors.  Her  slogan is “a flea market at your fingertips…nothing you need, everything you want” which concisely describes her little shop, June and Ruby’s at 209 Second Street, SW Charlottesville.  We bonded as mutual lovers of all things Alphonse Mucha and now, wearers of the Grow Your Own Roots Charlottesville t-shirt.  She’s carrying them in her store, so 3 cheers for Jann!  You should definitely check out her cutie website at www.juneandruby.com and welcome her to the club!  Yay!

A beautiful day

June 24th, 2009

coffee. anticipation. clear blue skies. top down. windy, country roads. beautiful homes. grassy fields. tall corn stalks. turn around. run down, ivy covered barns. bubbling fountain. cool breeze. tomatoes. dill. hosta. squash. lilies. cinnamon. fern. wrought iron slithering snake. garden isle. cross legged. scrunched up pants. sunny highlights. barefoot. shiny cherries. and some painting supplies….that is a plein air session at Jeanine’s.
